ISI Awarded Technical Assistance Project to Study Air Navigation Technologies for Chile

MCLEAN, VA., Mar 24, 2009 – Innovative Solutions International, Inc. is pleased to announce it has been selected to perform a Technical Assistance Project under a US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) grant. The contract is with the Civil General Aviation Directorate of Chile (DGAC).  The 15-month, nationwide study for the implementation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS) airspace technologies into Chilean airspace includes a detailed pilot program at the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Santiago.

Both ADS-B and LAAS (internationally called GBAS, for “ground-based augmentation system”) are being implemented today and will replace or be installed instead of current technology radars and Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). These two programs are the near-term cornerstones of the FAA's Next Generation (NextGen) system.  Both ADS-B and LAAS currently use the US Government provided Global Positioning System (GPS) and in the future will be interoperable with new Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provided by other nations.

“The study and pilot program aim to provide Chile with detailed plans to streamline the implementation of new air navigation technologies in a sequence that provides improvement first where it is needed most,” ISI President and CEO Bob Loh explains. "ISI is helping the FAA and other leading civil aviation organizations, like Chile’s DGAC, to implement the next generation of air traffic control systems to increase the safety, capacity, and efficiency of air travel the world over.  ISI's leading support of NextGen implementation not only includes ADS-B and LAAS, but other advanced systems and concepts such as: Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP); NextGen air traffic sequencing and spacing; Tailored Arrivals and Trajectory Based Operations; Collaborative Air Traffic Management; Dynamic Secure Tracking and Reporting System (DSTAR); Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS); GNSS Performance Monitoring Systems (GPMS); and safety planning and assessments of the NextGen systems".

Official announcement of the project can be accessed on the USTDA’s website at: http://www.ustda.gov/news/pressreleases/2008/LAC/Chile/ChileAviationTechnologies_092208.asp

ISI has successfully completed studies under USTDA grants on other aviation modernization projects in the Sothern African Development Community, Colombia, Morocco, and Venezuela, and is currently completing a project in India.
