ISI personnel have been involved with the GPS Product Team since the inception of the FAA’s satellite program, which began in 1992. Our design of the initial architecture and requirements set for the Wide Area Augmentation System and the Local Area Augmentation System was critical to the technical foundation of the program within the FAA and to gaining international acceptance of the technology for use in the civil aviation arena
We continue to support the FAA in a variety of capacities under several contracts.
GPSTAC contract:
ISI provides technical, operational and program management support to the FAA’s satellite navigation product teams. We support research and development using the NSTB, provide oversight of the WAAS prime contractor in the areas of systems engineering support and software assurance; facilitate the development of operations and maintenance plans and procedures; perform quality assurance on system documentation; develop process improvements; facilitate iCMM compliance; provide guidance and oversight of security issues; and provide direct support to FAA project managers.
Additionally, ISI supports the FAA in the development of the LAAS, focusing on both technical and program management issues. This includes project management coordination with industry groups, systems engineering, technical support, iCMM support, documentation management, operational development, and support with acquisition activities.
ISI provides operational support for the implementation of new technologies into the National Airspace. This includes technical and operational support to develop TERPScriteria, non-precision, and precision approaches and obstacle-clearance criteria based on satellite navigation, interference mitigation, coordination with the Interagency GPS Executive Board, and coordination with industry and government stakeholders.
ISI support extends beyond satellite navigation support and includes a variety of program support activities. We develop and maintain the FAA customer website , produce graphics and animations, develop briefings and information papers, manage special projects (international training course development, international implementation support, FAA employee handbooks, Knowledge Management support, conference planning, and support of the ”Tell FAA“ 09/11 response hotline). ISI also supports the FAA Office of Airports regarding the harmonization of procedure design criteria and airport standards. ISI provides program management and development support to the FAA Office of Airport Engineering Safety and Standards enterprise-wide GIS, aeronautical information data collection ,and airport surveying standards.
GPS & RNP contract:
ISI’s criteria development and maintenance for the FAA includes all classifications of aircraft from large jet transport aircraft through commuter, business, general aviation, and helicopters. Our involvement spans the process from analysis of system performance through computer modeling and simulation, flight test research, data analysis, drafting criteria, coordination of criteria within the FAA with industry, military, and where appropriate, internationally, to editorial preparation for publication and distribution. During the process, we develop recommendations for international standards and criteria and present them before international panels and committees to assure both the safety and economy of international operations and harmonization between the US and international aviation communities.
ISI develops criteria for the application of RNP for all phases of flight including en-route, arrival approach, departure, and advanced applications. We provide implementation policy and guidance that supports the optimum application of GPS to each level of RNP and guidance for the application of RNP to each type of operation. We develop criteria for advanced applications of RNP such as complex, flexible terminal routing. We ensure international standards and implementation are compatible with US standards. |
